Downgrading from Safari 6 to 5.1.7?!

Hi all!

Was about to hit the button and upgrade to Mountain Lion. Now I'm one of those guys who jumps the moment something new and shiny is released, but one thing is stopping me.
That's Safari.

a few reasons:
1 | NO RSS. WHY?!
2 | NO ACTIVITY WINDOW. are you kidding me?!
3 | can't use backspace to go back a page now. WHAT?!
4 | http(s) section of a web address is not shown
5 | that ANNOYING address bar epilepsyinducing flicker!
amongst other things.

seriously, Apple makes some cool stuff, but its like they took everything good and threw it out of the window. if only they threw the RAM out free when i closed tabs. arghhh!

Until I find solutions, I'll hold my guns and stick to my trusty Lion.
So, knowledgable friends, is there any way to downgrade to Safari 5.1.7? I'd be very grateful!

You can get all the functionality of the activity window in the Web Inspector, which is enabled in the preferences by checking "Show Develop in the menu bar"

Gosh, didn't notice this crappy "backspace" change either...I use it all the time!

Alternative for you: try rolling back with Time Machine.

5.1.7 will not install on 10.8; it'll fail with a "you must have 10.7" message. I need to do a backup at some point and then try messing with the install script

I am still on Lion, so it should be OK...I will try rolling back with TM.

Edit 2: was able to reinstall all older frameworks and system files. However, OS X does not allow me to delete the new version, which can't even open now (with the older frameworks). Any tips?

forgive me if this sounds stupid, but is it possible to copy the link of the file, paste it in the address bar, and then hit Option-Enter? its not possible in Lion

For a lawyer you seem to spend quiet a lot of time on macrumors. Don't you have someone to sue or something?

Once you unzip the invisible, old Safari (to make it visible again, remove the dot in front of its name), you will see that a few folders show up. The files and subfolders within those folders should be moved back to their respective places in the boot disk.

Of course ALL of this should be done with care and a backup to avoid disaster. I took away the newest framework files and put them in a Safari 6 folder just in case...then I moved the older framework/widget/etc. files to those original System folders.

Finally, I moved the old Safari to Applications (renamed to 5.1.7) and deleted Safari 6 with a terminal command (google how to delete core Apple apps). So all is fine now!

Edit: TM doesn't really work unless you restore all the files above one by one...prone to confusion, so I took the approach described above instead.

I work an awful lot every day; these comments are only made after working hours. Hopefully you have noticed that I don't live in the US or its time zones. Next time you may avoid posting such provocative rubbish.

Safari would have been perfect if they didn't take away the activity window. I do hope it will come back if enough of people complain.

This is very frustrating! I think there should be some Terminal workaround to make Safari 5.1.7 installer work over Safari 6. Maybe some files that telling system about installed version of Safari should be removed?

BRLawyer, I've stumbled at the first step and cant find the old Safari, even after using the Terminal show files trick. will downloading 5.1.7 then extracting help? or is there another way?

Check the link I've posted above for finding it...then you MUST move it to a different place like your desktop, remove the dot from it and unzip the file. Unless ML already deleted that backup, which I would find improbable...

Sooooo disappointed

I have been so much in love with apple for about 20 years. For the last couple of years, I have been falling out of love. Apple seems to "know better" than us users, and decide how our experience should be. Well, sorry to say, but for a while now, they have been taking me--and I think I am not alone--down a blind alley where everything becomes murkier and more difficult and more "well, buddy, if you do not like our new stuff, then too bad because it means you don't know what's good". I think that apple has been going ahead of itself while trying to stay ahead of the competition.
After spending my whole Saturday trying to revert to the previous version of Safary, entering my admin password a hundred times and rebooting twenty times, I had to reinstall version 6. Since I hate wasting my time on such things, I installed Chrome and I decided I am going to be very happy with it. May be if someone comes with an easy way to revert, I'll follow it. Until then, I'll take Safari off my dock.
Apple is doing the kind of stuff that did Microsoft in, making users waste hours by the million and generating frustration. The moment there is a new apple on the block, I'll leave this one as it is starting to go too bad.

Isn't safari 5 still there?

If you have activated the Developer Menu in preferences you can go

Develop > Open Page With > Safari 5.1.2

You have 2 Safaris open then but means Safari 5 is still there somewhere right??

Actually it isn't, I just checked and it's found another copy of Safari on a snow leopard install on an internal hard drive. Which explains why I can also see Firefox 2, 3 and 8!

So I guess it isn't there for everybody after all.
