iPhone Download all iCloud photos to iPhone

Hello all,

So I had an old iPhone 5s 16 gb and used to manage the space with iCloud as I didn’t have any enough space.

However, I just got a new iPhone 7 256 gb and want to keep everything locally now. So how do I download all photos from iCloud to iPhone and then delete them from the cloud.

I do see all pictures in my photos app but I think they are not all downloaded.

In the settings, see if optimise storage or download and keep originals is selected.

What’s the desire to delete them afterwards from the cloud?

Because I want to stop using paying for thr bigger iCloud storage but plan that I was using so far. Instead will be using google photos to backup all photos.

on the iphone 7, sign into icloud and turning on icloud photos. you can do this by going to settings>tap on your name(if signed in already, otherwise it’ll ask you to sign in)>tap icloud>photos>icloud photo library

on this same screen make sure “download and keep originals” is checkmarked

once your photos have been completely downloaded, you can go back to the same screen and turn off icloud photo library and when asked what to do with your photos choose to keep the originals on the phone

Like mentioned Settings > Photos > "download and keep originals".

Plug in the phone and let them download. Then move them to a different medium and make sure they are viewable with a couple programs.

Once you are certain that you have all your photos and they are safe, settings > photos > toggle off iCloud Photo Library.

Personally with multiple iOS devices I found iCloud Photo Library invaluable. In combination with a Mac (set to download and keep originals) its like a real time back up system if my iPhone is stolen or broken. I can replace the iPhone however the photos on it are worth MUCH more than the device. The 1 dollar I pay a month for 50gb iCloud is definitely worth it and I will definitely upgrade once that fills.

But different strokes for different folks. The above should get you sorted out. Again though just make sure you have everything before turning off iCloud Photo Library just to be on the safe side.
