Is there an app that will allow you to download music in a zip file and play it on the iPhone? I found one called files but it doesn’t work with the pause feature of the AirPods

You gonna need to figure out how to download your music to computer and then transfer them to your phone. Or subscribe to one streaming service.
Your iOS device is still not a computer. It is not powerful enough to directly play file inside a zip file. You still need to unzip it before you can play them.
Regarding the apps, foobar2000, VLC are two nice options. nPlayer works well too but it is pricey.

There is an app called Files that will extract the files. However when using my AirPods, rather than pause the music when I take them out, the audio gets transferred to the phone. Is there anything similar that will work with the AirPod pause feature?

Any music player with built in file manager should do.
