Makes sense. Still, I want to see a functional counter work so I can get an idea of how many people really have downloaded a particular app.

Apple removed that feature of the app store since it would make it easy for people to figure out a developer's earnings on the apps they sell.

This only worked on July 11th. Then many of the bigger named developers (read EA and Sega) were complaining because they didn't want to have their financial data available to anyone. ( ex. (price of app * .7) * # of downloads = total to developer) So the counters were promptly changed to 0, where they haven't moved from since.

oh I didnt realize it did work at one time. Probably because I got my iPhone on July 13th, so I never saw the 'working' counter.

anyway, that's too bad, developers should be able to opt in/out for that. I know it would certainly affect my decision to download an app if I knew the # times it was downloaded.

Opting in and out would be great. Of course, it would be a battle between developers. I think buyers like the info, but anyone who wanted to keep their earnings secret would feel very pressured to give up the info.

Most of us are on the other side and want to know, however, I can see where someone who created an app and told family and friends would not want them knowing how the app is doing ("Hey, you buy the beer big shot!").
