My understanding is that I can download Catalina without installing immediately. I thought there was a download option in the system updates area, but when I go there, it says "Upgrade Now". If I do that does it give me an option to backout and just save the installer for later?

The Catalina installer will download.
When the download is complete, the installer will automatically launch, showing a window allowing you to continue with the install. Just Quit the installer at that point!
Copy the app to another drive, so you can use it later.
Delete the download from your Applications folder (it takes up a lot of space!)

Go to the app store to download it manually, and then copy it to somewhere safe.

Or go to the Apple Downloads website and download the full/delta/combo updates from there.

I did initially go to the app store, and it redirected me to System Preferences / Software Update.

Ok, I'll give it a try. Just wanted to be cautious as can't upgrade right now. I need to try on a separate drive first.
