As you can guess from the title of the thread I wanted to ask if there is any way to download music to the iOS music app without the hassle of using a Mac or PC. Switched to an iOS only setup but could not manage to do the above mentioned task. Hope somebody has a solution for this. And no, I dont mean to download pirated music but some free audio books for example.

Greetings

You can use third-party apps to avoid music sync with iTunes, but I really don't remember of any good and easy way for downloading music directly from the web... Do you have any specific website with music? Or where are these books atm?

Edit: p.s. Do you need specifically Music app or VLC will work as well?

the audio books I wanted to download to the apple music app are german audio books read by the "WDR" (one of the main channels in germany). They offer an audio book from Ken Follett for free download over christmas. I would like to use the apple music app instead of a third party app, but I guess there's no way to make that happen :(

Can you download them to your computer? If yes, I understand that you would prefer avoiding it but the easiest way will be to import these tracks to VLC with File Sharing. No sync needed, just copy&paste to Documents folder.

Also you can use iMazing to load them directly to Music app from computer, but it's a paid app so not sure if you'll want it only for this (it's still best iTunes replacer imo though :) ). Or if you have only 5-7 books you can import them with free version, test limit should be around 40-50 media files if not mistaking.

That’s one major problem of going to the iOS-only setup as your options of some of even the basic tasks on a PC are rather limited.
The short answer is no. Either you need a third party app or use a computer. There is absolutely no way you can get music directly inside your music app without going through iTunes Store or using a computer.

Going to look into iMazing, thank you!

I‘m realizing this more and more every day. Hope Apple will give us a big surprise with iOS 13, at least in terms of file management..

Yeah would be nice, but alas, that’s not happening. Apple is protecting/forcing you into a Apple Music subscription if you want the full feature set (sync to watch and so on)

You don’t need a sub to sync music to your watch. I used to sync my lossless playlists to the watch (because 16GB, why not?). It takes insanely long and the process is tedious. But it works. As of the other features, I am not sure what I am missing except “listen across all devices” which is what I don’t care too much as long as I sync the same thing over all devices except watch.

I know, but without a Apple Music subscription it’s hardly userfriendly or elegant to get music on your phone/watch. It’s back to the bloaty iTunes and a cable in your phone. Everything else went wireless 10 years ago - but not Apple (If you do not purchase/subscribe your music on their service)

I tried to go iOS only a couple of years ago by selling my MacBook Pro and opting for an iPad.
The thing is though, that I create my own music on the iPad and have a huge library of old songs created on the Mac in iCloud, but there was just no way of getting these into my iTunes library without the Mac.
I even took a third party subscription to get my music on Apple Music so I would have some way of listening to it, but that’s expensive and takes a while to validate.

And this, to me is a huge oversight on Apple’s part.
Cutting the cord is nigh on impossible for creators like me and restricting one operating system while green lighting another does absolutely nothing to prevent privacy, which is, I’m guessing, the reason it’s not possible on iOS.

I had high hopes for Files when it came out, but it’s implementation left me frustrated.
Today I own a MacBook Pro (again) so I can modify my library, by changing tags and adding new music.

That’s one bloody expensive workaround though and I’d love for Apple to realise a true file system and implement a way of adding your own media files into iOS apps in the future.
