My mac updated iTunes with what it said was 7.7; however it was 7.6. I've gone to the Apple site to download 7.7 about 5 times, and after going through the process, I always end up with 7.6. Is this a general problem? Of course, my iPhone won't work on iTunes because it keeps telling me I need the newer version of iTunes. Is there something wrong with my computer or is it the site?

Have you tried checking in iTunes? Go to iTunes in the menu bar and look for updates there.

Yep, I tried that

It says "there is a new version of iTunes available, would you like to download?" Then, it looks for new software, but doesn't ever give me the option to download iTunes, only Safari and Quicktime.
