Sorry if this has been covered, I am new to the site and new to the world of mac having recently purchased an Ipad Air 3 and downloaded the very latest software.

The app I want to install is not in the app store so I have been trying to download the programme directly from a third part to my tablet and run it but unless I am doing something wrong I am having no luck. I am competent on a pc but as is the case, useless on an Ipad.

When I download the file it says there are 7.5MB and it is a pkg file and when I select it, it tells me there is one file and underneath it says preview. When I select preview there is nothing there. I have installed a zip extractor which I assume as with a pc, would automatically give me the option to unzip but I am just going around in circles.

is it possible to download and install apps this way or am I limited to the poor offerings within the app store?

Are you on a Mac or an iPad? MacOS (Macs) and IOS (phones) iPadOS are close relatives, but are different.

It does not seem to matter what I download. The company tell me it is compatible with the Iphone/tablet and Mac and yet I get the same results everytime. Iotransfer.

Again, your post header says Mac but the device you mention is iPad. Different. Which is it?

I am looking at AirTrans IOSTransfer and it is in the IOS App store. What do you want to transfer?

In the PC and Mac worlds it is common to go to individual vendor websites and download software. That is not the case in the IOS/iPadOS worlds. It does happen (with jailbreaks), but it is exceedingly rare.

Just like with iPhone the iPad apps are supplied by the App Store. If an app doesn’t work or you have some issue with an app from the App Store, I would contact the developer of the app.

Apps downloaded to your iPad must be installed directly from the iPad App Store on the device. Unlike Windows, the Mac and Android you can't officially install apps any other way without jailbreaking. Jailbreaking is a bad idea in this day and age and if your experience is limited with this stuff, then it's an even worse idea. I recommend doing things the proper way and can't see an advantage to installing apps any other way.
