Hey there,

I'm trying format a new drive with El Capitan for my old MP3,1, the problem is I can't download the El Capitan install on my 5,1 since the Mojave update, safely downloading it through the app store no longer works as it redirects you to the software update launcher and attempts to download it there, which then fails. Is there any other way of safely downloading the El Capitan installer without getting it third party, maybe using terminal?

Thanks

Did you tried the link from the Apple Support page, How to upgrade to OS X El Capitan?

Just tested with 10.13.6 and the App Store rejects the download. I can download from past purchases:

From anything earlier than 10.12, Apple Support page link should work. I downloaded from my MP3,1 with 10.11.6 earlier this week.

I’m trying to download the installer from my 5,1 running mojave because i dont have any other drive running el cap on my 3,1. Also even though it should show in my purchases, el capitan installer is no longer there. The revamped app store changes alot from the one in 10.13 and I cant replicate what you're doing in Mojave

You can't download anything earlier than 10.13.6 with installinstallmacos.py.

You mean running my 5,1 in sierra to get the download? Isnt there any other way of getting it on mojave?

I ended up finding an old mavericks installer on an an SD card, booted into on 3,1, changed date for certificate to verify, and installed mavericks onto it. The download from App Store worked from there. Thanks again.
All roads lead to Rome. Glad that worked this way too.

I’ve noticed trying to download high Sierra in the past few days, the download link in the App Store only brings down a 20mb stub, it appears to then do the install live over the network. Mojave downloaded the full 6gb file.

I suppose that Apple is doing this for a year or so in a controlled test and now it’s widespread.

If you use installinstallmacos.py, it always download the full installer.
