Ok so my problem is I can't download new podcasts on my iPhone over 3G when I'm at work. It used to work when i had iOS 4 like a week ago but ever since I upgrade to iOS 5, I can't download a podcast from iTunes music store. Like today Bill Simmons came out with a new BS Report and When I click get episode, I go to downloads menu, and it saids "preparing to download" but it never downloads. I touch the pause button and then click to resume but it just does the same thing.
Has anybody else have this problem? I haven't try over wifi because where I work there's no wifi signal.

And when I go to settings>store on my phone I have cellular data on to download purchases

I just tried the same podcast and mine sits at preparing as well. It did however start streaming it when I clicked on the title. My guess is that it's over the 20 MB limit and therefor won't download.

Just flipped to Wi-Fi and it's 57.2 MBs. Started right away when my phone was on Wi-Fi.

So I just updated an app over my phone using 3G not WiFi and it worked fine. So not sure why it's not letting me download a podcast. I haven't tried a song yet because I'm afraid if I buy a song and then it never downloads

Is that the reason? Because the file is too big? The bad thing this I tried streaming today over 3G and it didn't work and I don't have a wifi signal in the location I'm at. I'm stuck at work right now. However yesterday episode did work when I streamed it over 3G.

Same issue

You are not alone.

This has been driving me nuts for the past week as well.

The file size suggestion isn't the issue. Simmons podcasts under an hour would ALWAYS download without issue in the past. Now they just seem to sit in queue unless you're in wifi. They'll stream fine but I very much prefer to DL them and pause/rewind listen through iPod. Much more convenient and it seems like itd be easier on the data usage.

This issue impacting all podcast downloads for me. Not limited to those of Simmons or ESPN.

I talked about this in another thread...I thought I was able to download a 44MB podcast over 3G, but wasnt able to recreate it. It seems to hang for anything over 20MB, but the error message (connect to Wifi as file is over 20MB)no longer exists.

I suspect the message/warning was dumped due to iCloud :apple: functionality, but it appears to be not working for podcasts.

3G & WiFi both...

Has anyone resolved this yet? It's happening here in 3G AND over WiFi.

On my iPhone it's "get more episodes" -> "free" -> "download" and then it appears as it should.

On the iPod touch it's "get more episodes" -> "free" -> "get episode" and while it looks as though it's downloading the episode, it isn't. This is so frustrating!

BTW We're not using iCloud because it duplicates items in iCal, so that shouldn't be a factor...

Same thing happening with me. Can't download a podcast. "Preparing to download", but nothing happens. I hate this useless 20mb restriction. Why do apple care how much data we use over 3g. What's wrong with a warning message before downloading big files, and letting the user make the decision.

Anyway to bypass this silliness?

It's from carriers, not Apple. Take it up with them.

Status went from "Preparing to download" to "Processing." Wonder what will happen if I wait another 5 hours...

I'm getting this too. Preparing to download, and then occasionally a 'processing' message, but never a download. Same thing with wifi and 3G. Very annoying to have to DL all podcasts to PC first then transfer. Sometimes I'm on the road etc. But on top of that, I *sometimes* get a 12.3kb starter... but it's just a tease, it eventually says 'download error' like the others.
