downloading in sleep mode?

I was wondering...if I start downloading a rental, can I then put the ATV to sleep while it downloads (by holding the play button on the remote down for a few seconds), or do I have to wait until the download finishes first? I have not tried putting it to sleep during a download yet for fear of getting an error or erasing the download.

I think it downloads. I rented an HD movie turned the AppleTV Off(sleep mode) came back in the morning and it was done.

Sleep Mode is not really sleep mode. The apple tv still runs even though the light goes off. My unit at least is still just as hot in "sleep" mode and when i go back to Apple TV, before I even push a button on the remote, I can still see the screensaver.
