iPad Downloading iTunes media to external drive

So I’m not sure if this has already been asked (probably has but couldn’t find what I wanted). I want to download all my iTunes movies and TV shows onto an external drive for safe keeping in the future should anything be removed from iTunes.

I previously did this with my Mac and kept files on a western digital drive (4TB). However, I’ve not owned a Mac for some years now and my 2020 iPad Pro 12.9” is my main device.

I wanted to know is it possible to download iTunes media to an external drive connected to the iPad and also then access these files for playback should I want/need to? I have a feeling it’s not possible but wanted to see what options are available.

This has come up and I thought the consensus was you could not do this on the iPad.

This was also my understanding prior to iPadOS 14 but wasn’t sure. I’ve read some information elsewhere but may be getting the methods mixed up.
