I have many old Yahoo! and Gmail accounts that I do not need to check frequently, and I am about to set up Mail on a new Mac and I'm trying to decide if I should create accounts for each Mail account in Mail to download and send the email for each account OR if I should just forward the mail from each of those old accounts to a Gmail account that I check all the time, and just download that Gmail account into Mail. Are there any pros/cons to either method? Thanks for any suggestions/info.

If you do not want to use them anymore, I would choose forwarding. I have done that as well. When you do not receive that much email on Yahoo and Gmail, then it is just a waste of energy and processing. The downside to this is that you may also receive spam alongside of it (unless you can filter that before forwarding) and that you cannot access your Gmail folders.
What I did is moving/uploading all my emails from my old accounts into my new account with Mail.

Might not be understanding exactly what this setup of yours is , but, are these old accounts already downloaded/existing on the current Mac? Can export those mailboxes, put onto external storage, then import them into Mail on the new Mac. Folders will be under "On My Mac".
Can then delete all the old mail in the rarely used accounts, then setup an account for each or forward. At least that way, have cleared up the clutter a bit on the old accounts, and don't have to re-download/forward everything from the old accounts.

I see a couple for Yahoo, but not familiar with them. Comments don't look great so do some research first. Otherwise, just use your web browser to view your Yahoo and Gmail accounts.
Another option is to use something like Airmail ($9.99 in App Store) or Postbox $15.00 to view these accounts. Keep them out of Mail so it's not cluttered.

Are you saying that it is a waste of energy and processing because Mail has to check for new mail from the different accounts so if it was simply forwarded from the old accounts into a new account it would result in less processing on the Mac and better battery life?
Yep. Forwarding is completely server-side and you only need to add one account to Mail.
I have in total of 9 email accounts but I only set up 7 of them. If I don't need an email address, I will send all received email to an account I check regularly and desert that address.
Mail forwarding is not that good, I think, as most mail servers don't provide much option to filter incoming messages before forwarding.
You should consider deactivating unused account as Gmail provides such feature. I don't know anything about Yahoo, though.
