Is this true?

I know it's the other way around that if you own the PC version, you can install the mac for free! Does this work the other way around???

I'm ready to download Left4Dead and need to know which drive to choose.

Thanks.

Yes they're the same. On STEAM that is, if you buy a "Steam play" game it's available in your steam account for both windows and mac. So you're buying the same thing from the steam store. It will be available to both platforms whether you're buying under the mac store page or the windows store page (they're really all the same).

So yeah just buy either one from steam and you'll have it on your steam account ready to play. Just note L4D1 is not yet available for Mac, but L4D2 is out now. It runs great btw on my machine.. will upload a video soon.

Thanks

Thanks for the helpful post kind sir. ;)

I was thinking of downloading this for windows and would was wondering if I could port it over to the mac if/when they are ported. It doesn't say steam play so maybe not...

Also, Do I download the game again if I do buy a game that's on windows and ported to mac. I will have to download that to mac before I can play, right?

Thanks again for your posts, you seem knowledgeable on the subject.

If the the makers of those game decide to do a Mac port, you will have access to it. However, as of right now, there no mac versions of those games at all (all of them only have that little Windows insignia next to the release date).

You also do have to re-download the game again for different systems, even if it is the same game.

You know I kept saying make sure to buy from steam, but obviously Left 4 Dead, as with all Valve games require steam so yeah you're fine on buying Left 4 Dead 2 ANYWHERE, retail or digital since they activate on steam. And the games that are steam play will play on either OS. I think L4D1 is the only major game from valve not on Mac OSX yet.

As for downloading/installing the game twice, yes for the most part you will have to do it twice, BUT for these valve games, I was able to copy most windows files over to the place where they should be on OSX since the file structure is the same for steam. for example I was able to do this for L4D2 just today, I already had it on bootcamp, copied over the files onto my OSX partition after allowing steam to create the initial folder setup and bam saved 7GB of downloading =)

sorry for another long post, just trying to explain help out as much as possible.

I'm really surprised you copying over the files over to the Mac actually worked. I woulda thought that the Mac side of things required Mac files. Kudos for good work.

Yeah I think it's just Valve was really efficient in making the Source engine on OSX read the raw files. I mean some files I didn't copy over b/c I knew they needed OSX versions like a .exe launcher or some .dll files. So there were plenty of missing files, but Steam verifies the integrity of the game files also and repairs files automatically, so whatever wasn't correct/missing it was automatically downloaded and fixed. But yeah most of the files I looked were just raw game files which is why I suspected they could transfer (given they were pasted into the correct folders).

Unless you live in Australia, in which case make sure you buy L4D2 on Steam, after setting your location to the USA, otherwise you will end up with the censored version.

Blood, bodies, fire ... all the things that define the zombie genre basically.

lol

On September 15, 2009, Left 4 Dead 2 was refused classification by the OFLC[23][24] with the reason being "The game contains realistic, frenetic and unrelenting violence which is inflicted upon "the Infected" who are living humans infected with a rabies-like virus that causes them to act violently". The game was edited and released with an MA15+ classification two months later. This was due to the games creators and an online petition that began circulating shortly after the public became aware of the game being banned.

That's insane. I had no idea Australia did these types of things. Learn something new everyday, even when you're not in school.
