Okay, so I downloaded WMP from this site http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/software/Macintosh/osx/default.aspx and it doesn't work. I just get a blank white icon that says:

"QuickTime cannot open the file: "Windows Media.sitx"
it is not a file that QuickTime understands (-2048)"

It just doesn't seem to be an application at all, just a file that I can't open with anything.

Anyone know what's wrong here?

Cheers.

Well, .sitx is a compressed format (like .zip), so it sounds like you need Stuffit Expander. Lord only knows why Apple stopped bundling it with the OS when they moved to Tiger.

Indeed! That really was a bad move.

There are so many .sit(x) compressed files around over at the popular legal Mac-download sites, that it's a real handicap leaving stuffit out.
The problem is that new Tiger users are not triggered into downloading this free utility. So, how do they know it is there? Who will tell them?

Someone will...

Hopefully someone will. I guess Stuffit decided to end their bundled software license with Apple, which is too bad.

It's getting rarer and rarer to see this, although it's true. The preferred method now is clearly to make a disk image. This has lots of benefits, including letting you make a person see an agreement or license before being able to mount the image. And zip is also an option that requires no third-party software...I think there isn't any good reason for any distributors to be wrapping their software in Stuffit files anymore. Even Microsoft moved to disk image when they upgraded MSN Messenger, didn't they? It's just this program that hasn't been updated too recently....

I would imagine there was some monetary issue involved as Mac OS X has picked up the functionality of several utilities.

No great conspiracy here. The Tiger-compatible version of Stuffit Expander was not ready when Tiger went to manufacturing. However, Apple provided a link to it from the Apple.com website as soon as it was ready.

Hmmmm... I don't know about this. I got Tiger via pre-order. I thought I continued using Stuffit as I recovered programs after upgrading. Besides which, it's been months, and several new versions of Tiger have been mastered for imaging onto new computers -- the image file being used today for new Macs is not 10.4.0 that was released back in April.

No, the other poster was correct. Stuffit didn't have a Tiger compatible version when Tiger was released.

Right, but it does now, and it's still not included. Therefore mere availability isn't the only factor working here.

That's a fair enough point. Curious.
