Today I clicked my downloads icon on the bar, and all of the sudden, it went "Poof" literally a little cloud was there. ANd it disappeared. So I went into my home folder, and copied the download folder onto my desktop. I drug it onto the bar, and have the download icon beside the documents icon. This is where I think I made a mistake. I put the folder that was on the desktop into trash. I emptied it. Now, no matter what I do, all of my downloads go straight to trash.

I'm thinking there is a download folder in my trash, or the two have become one, but I can't fix the problem. It's getting annoying. I did go under safar>preferences>general>saved files>downloads, but it's still happening. Please help.

Get rid of your current download folder. Create a new folder on your desktop, name it "downloads" and drag it next to your document folder. Try downloading from safari and your download should end up there.

Ok. Thank you for the response. I'm not very computer literate, so bear with me real quick. I have 1 "downloads" folder down at the toolbar at the bottom of the screen next to my documents folder. I also have a folder on my desktop now which is another "downloads" folder. It has everything in it. So how do I get rid of both of them? Put them into the trash and empty?

Also, I've never made a folder before. How do I do that? And what should I download from safari?

Move anything you want to save out of the folders. Move both download folders to trash and empty the trash. Click on desktop and then press command-shift-N keys together to make a new folder. Name this folder "Downloads" and move it next to the document folder. Then just try downloading anything you like from safari to see if it ends up in the folder.

Awesome. Thanks man. Appreciate it.

Edit: It's still going to the trash

What could make this kind of thing happen? I'm sure I screwed something up royally, but I don't understand how this works. Is it possible I have a download folder in my trash or something?

In Safari general preferences "save downloaded files to" see if you can use the dropdown arrow and use the "other" option to manually select the download folder you just made. Then give it another try. You should now have only the one download folder you just made.

Cool! It worked. I'm still getting a copy in my trash though. It looks like an unzipped version of the download. Is this ok?

If you have the file you need in the download folder, I guess it's ok. Do you have the preference to "remove download list items" set for manual, or when safari quits, or upon successful download.Must be something in the preferences for handling the downloaded files.

I have it set to manual, I tried switching it to "Upon completion of download" but it still did the same thing.

I don't know why you're getting the copy in the trash, I'm new to OSX myself :)
Had an old mac running the former OS till I got a new imac a couple of weeks ago. someone with more experience might have an answer, or Apple telephone support is very helpful and kind to us newbies. Good luck and enjoy your mac.
