If history is any indication, Yosemite will be released in Oct. That's 11 weeks away. Assuming a 2-3 week update schedule, developer preview is set to receive 3-5 updates. That's not an insignificant amount.

Apple hasn't commented on how often the beta will be updated. It may be once a month, which means 2-3 updates before release.

The only thing I see the beta having for it is that you will be able to convert it to production, whereas the developer preview will need to be uninstalled.

You don't have to do a fresh install from DP to GM. I've done updates fine without doing a clean install.
