drag and drop on desktop icons stopped working!

I am trying to drag some of the items on my desktop to the bin but nothing will move at all. I have tried altering them to read and write files controlled by myself but still nothing seems to work! any help would be really appreciated. Thankyou. Katie.x

have you tried to highlight the files and use the menu bar, click on 'file' and choose 'move to trash'? as a temporary fix.
