Dreamhost - $7.95 p/m (on 2 year contract) 20GB Storage, 1TB transfer??

I'm on dreamhost and I've never had any problems with it. I'm not quite sure how they keep dropping their prices and offering so much, thruthfully were I not using them I'd think they are a little sketchy, but I seldom have problems with em.

The price is of course a factor, but if the speed/reliability/service is crap, I'll just stick with ASO.

I've been with DreamHost for a few months and don't have any complaints. I came from ICDSoft.com, which was killer, but I outgrew their services.

Personally, for the money, I don't know of anyone who beats DH.

It took me 4 days on average to get support questions answered.

I get responses the same day from ASO.

DreamHost has outages DAILY.

I have had no such issues with ASO.

Hence, I am no longer with Dreamhost.

The response time is slow from what I've heard, but everything else seems to be up to par. If you do sign up, please use my signature link.. the referal service is amazing.

I've got ASO and it seems slow, a lot. It seems like whenever I try to get into control panel, and view the site.. or refer folks to it - it gets bogged down.

IMHO.
 
Hmmmm, well, I have been told that on shared hosting packages from Dreamhost each host is actually only allowed 60 minutes CPU time a day. I'm not 100% sure exactly what that means, but it doesn't sound good. Think I'll stick with ASO.

It just means that you don't need to be a resource hog. :)

If you're using 60 minutes of CPU time, your adversely effecting everyone else on that box, because your monopolizing 1/24 of the day's CPU cycles. You won't see this sort of resource consumption unless you're running a torrent tracker or something similar.

That's true indeed, I've had one of those dastardly emails. But to be honest, you're going to be hard pressed to get through that much CPU unless you're setting up a forum.

To give you a rough estimate, my site gets around 1500-2000 odd uniques a day, with over 5GB of bandwidth used daily, and I don't use up my CPU "allowance". I only got warned when I got heavily linked (dugged etc) and was getting over 20,000 hits a day.

I actually moved from ASO to Dreamhost. The short answer is ASO is better but Dreamhost offers a lot more for the money.

I think if everyone started using up their just half of their bandwidth allowance/month the servers would go down pretty fast. They are probably just banking on the fact that most of their customers probably wont even use 2% of their 1tb allowance.

Try http://www.textdrive.com if you want reliable hosting.

hence, overselling.

quite easy to see if you know anything about hosting and servers.
 
:d I signed up for Dreamhost this summer when it was only $7.95 a YEAR! Plus, my disk space and bandwidth go up 10GB per week for life :cool: . The only problem they have is frequent DDoS attacks because of their popularity. Also, with the CPU minutes, they 'shoot for' 75 CPU minutes a day, but if you go over they'll just move you to a different (quieter traffic) server.

Also the applekeynotes site goes down because the owner of the domain messed up the DNS settings.
 
I signed up with DreamHost last April during their $.77/month deal (7th anniversary). It ends in about 2 months, and I think I'm going to switch to one of ASO's lifetime plans if they're still available by then.
DH is probably better than most hosts, but they can be sort of slow sometimes, and I got emails from them about database servers being down for repairs or not working all the time. It's nice to know they are on top of things, but I think they're definitely starting to oversell, something ASO is very good about not doing (they stop registrations if they're short of servers rather than cramming more in)...

That's a direct result of overselling. The cheaper the hosting the slower your site will be.

They are definitely overselling. A server worth of bandwidth for $7.95 per month is impossible when it costs at least $100 per month per server illustrates this fact. Just watch what happens when a few people on each server try to use 1TB of bandwidth...
 
I've been with dreamhost for about 4 months with no issues whatsoever. However, I am really tempted by the special deal going on over at textdrive:

honestly I have several friends who are on Dreamhost and they swear by it. 1tb is pretty hard to beat. Emotionalpunk.com which is a pretty huge music site that my friend just re-released is hosted on Dreamhost and he loves it. Infact, I suggest dreamhost to all my freelance web clients.

That said, I personally use ASO. However, I have to say I disagree with people about the speed of ASO, at times it definitely goes slower for me.

They were using well under their bandwidth, but were gettign hit so hard they crashed other sites on the shared server they were on.

They are tons better than the last host I was with (and had been with since 1999). I'm quite happy that I switched. I haven't had any issue with outages or bandwidth, where as my last host couldn't seem to keep the e-mail servers up (which is important for my work).

I moved based on them hosting a friends site... and the unrealistic prices my old host was charging (more than 4 times what I pay now).

You get 1 TB for a month. If the Digg Effect causes you to use half it it in two days, that's roughly 250GB/day or 11GB/hour. I don't know of many (shared) servers that can handle sustained loads like that, not counting email and other customers on the server. It took my sites down (I'm on Sunset) because I'm assuming I'm on the same server. Grrr...
