Drive 1 or 2?

I am considering replacing the OS disk in my 1012 Mac Mini Server with an SSD. When I turn the Mini over, will the the primary disk - Server HD - be on the top or the bottom?

I want to replace the primary drive first; I'll do the data drive later.

Is this a difficult task, seeing as how the cable is already in place?

System profiler in Utilities in osx is the best way to tell. Under 'serial ATA' it will tell which HDD is in the upper bay or the lower bay. The drive with the recovery partition on it in sys profiler is the OS drive.

To avoid on confusion, the lower bay in the mini is the one just under the wifi grill when you turn the mini over and open it. The upper bay is the one tucked up inside which is the upper bay when the mini is right way up.

Normally the OS is on the lower bay drive which is the first drive under the wifi grill when you open the mini up.

For $25, you can buy a USB3/SATA docking station (or an external USB3 enclosure). Just drop the SSD into the dock, and go.

Saves you from having to open up the Mini and start swapping things around.

You will be surprised and pleased with just how fast an external USB3/SSD can be.
