I just wasted over 20 hours running Tech Tool Pro 4 on my 160 GB disk drive in my dual G4/800. It found a rather nasty, but not crippling problem. I don't even remember the error--it's been that long. The application apparently crashed before it finished with the repairs but thankfully, hadn't gotten past the point where I would have clicked okay to apply the changes.

Is DiskWarrior significantly faster?

bousozoku, were you running it from the CD or eDrive? Apparently the CD is more reliable (won't crash on you) but I don't have any first hand experience, that's only what I've heard. :)

I've had better luck with the eDrive but I've also got a problem with the SuperDrive and CD-ROMs. When it gets warm, it has no problem with DVDs, but won't read CDs of any kind.

So, in order to set up an eDrive, I'll have to wait until the room cools down. :(

Okay, so the problems with the Superdrive are unrelated (probably). Do you think you could get an external to try running it directly from the CD?

Also, have you done the usual resetting PRAM/PMU/whatever for the drive? :)

I suspect that it wanted to read the CD to switch functionality and couldn't continue because the drive refused to work properly.

No, I hadn't recently reset anything, but it's been this way for a while. I suppose it might be logical to assume that I need to replace the SuperDrive.
