Head's up for anyone who uses DriveDx. The latest 1.11.0 update breaks all USB SMART monitoring on Big Sur 11.4 (20F71). Reinstalling the driver does not resolve. Physically disconnecting and reconnecting after cold boot does not resolve. Drives were reporting prior to the update only when connected after boot. Now getting "Diagnostics of external drives is unavailable" message for every single USB drive.

This has become more and more of a problem with every macOS update in Big Sur and seems to be getting worse. Monitoring for the internal Apple issued drives and true Thunderbolt connected are the only that report successfully.

Anyone find a working alternative to DriveDx with Big Sur 11.4?

I had this problem as well.

First, I rebuilt the kernel extensions cache, as described on the DriveDx website. That did not help (but perhaps it contributed?). But they also mentioned something about conflicting drivers, so I took a look at what I could do without. I removed 'Blackmagic Desktop Video' with Blackmagic's own uninstaller. Presto! The USB drives showed up in DriveDx after a restart (after physically reconnecting them, as per usual in Big Sur). Maybe you have Blackmagic stuff installed?

Don't know if this helps you, but I hope so. ;)

Still no luck after removing everything Blackmagic as a test. Rebuilt all kernel extensions caches again, but second gives a prompt/error on T2 machines.

I'm sorry to hear that. :( I also have a T2 mac. Did you uninstall with their official uninstaller app, to be sure everything is removed?

Assuming it's a driver conflict, maybe you can check and see if you have any 3rd party kernel extensions running, that may cause the problem. Try listing them in Terminal with "kextstat | grep -v com.apple", and investigate a little, heh.. 🙂

Other than that, I'm not really sure what to do. 😕 Anyone else know anything?

FWIW, I have had DriveDx 1.11.0 installed under 11.4 on my 7,1 for about a month and all of my external USB drives are always recognized and report status. Note that the system was already on 11.4 when DriveDx 1.11.0 was installed for the first time, so it may be the upgrade process (for the kext, I'm guessing) that's borked.

DriveDx 1.11.0 is working fine for me on my NcMP in Monterey. I have not tried it yet on Big Sur, but assuming no issues there.

Don't know what specifically changed from 11.4 > 11.5, but Big Sur 11.5 (20G71) works as previous 11.3 does with DriveDx. All USB once again reporting normally, if connected after boot. No changes made on my end.
