Looking at both cards (7950 and R9 280X) for my Mac Pro 5,1 /10.7.5. In both cases new PC cards price in at about the same as Mac cards. Should I be able to find drivers for Mac for both cards? Will using a PC card require flashing in either case?

No flashing required if you don't need boot screens.

Thanks. Will download the drivers. I do want boot screen. Since used cards which have been flashed for Mac run about the same on eBay as new cards at the big sites I'm thinking of just getting a new card and flashing it myself. Hoping I can find some how to resources on youtube or elsewhere.
FWIW - I'm not sure if anyone else has had any luck with these drivers on a Non-Sapphire card, but I can't boot my MP 1,1 into 10.7.5 with my Gigabyte 7950 and the above linked driver installed.
That probably makes sense, as the installer specifically requires "a supported Sapphire card" but if there's a hack/trick/workaround, I'm happy to be educated.

Hmmm. Forgive me for being a bit confused.
You're saying that genuine Sapphire 7950 Mac Edition would not boot a MacPro 1,1 into 10.7.5 because the driver only works with a 64bit efi?
Wouldn't tiamo's boot.efi enable a MacPro 1,1 with a genuine Sapphire 7950 Mac Edition 10.7.5? (I was just about to try that with my Gigabyte card...)
I chose the 7950 because I believed that after flashing it would work, although limited to PCI 1.1 specs, with Yosemite/ElCap, with a boot screen.
The boot screen is what I want/need so I can choose Lion (if needed for the time being) Yosemite, El Capitan and Ubuntu.
What I'm working toward is dual booting between El Capitan for primary day-to-day use and Ubuntu to continue to learn about Linux until I get a new Mac when the MacPro 1,1 will become a full-time Ubuntu or other Linux server.
Have I missed some crucial thing in the thousands of posts?
