Driving a second screen for in car rear seat?

Hi there,

Just wondering if the iPad would work as a replacement for my heavy and chunky portable DVD players that I attach to the headrests of my car so the two kids can watch movies on long journeys?

Assuming I can connect it to a second screen (which I think is possible) does the iPad display video on it's own screen and the external screen at the same time?

Apple sells both component and composite output kits for the iPad. Just depends on which one your display requires.

so...you're plan is to reduce all the potential uses of an expensive iPad to a simple DVD player/monitor mounted in a headrest...just because you want a lighter DVD player and so your two children can look at the same time?


Besides the option of just holding the iPad in their hands and sharing it between the two kids, you might be able to use an Apple iPad Dock Connector to VGA cable to connec the two monitors. Or they also have the component AV cable.

If you set up the monitor as a clone instead of an extension, it might work? Not sure how you'd wire it all up though.

Give it a try with a monitor at home before you attempt mounting it into your car.

Yeh I thought I'd just use it for one purpose and leave it in the car, can't see any other use for it outside of the car

..but I don't have one to try, hence the question...

I have a composite video cable for my iPad (Scosche cable, not Apple). When I plug it in, the video plays on the external display, but the iPad stops playing and switches to the info screen for the video.

It sounds like you're out of luck.

If you jailbreak the iPad you can use DisplayOut to mirror whatever you're doing on the iPad.

You can mount it to headrest with that.

Are you trying to do a video out from a dvd player?

Otherwise, you could download tv and movies from iTunes store.

i bought the apple composite cables and plugged it into my factory dvd system in the car. the Ipad will just show the info screen not the video. You'll lose video functionality on the ipad.

What is the second screen you are trying to drive? I'm using one iPad and a Proclip headrest mount. It's a very nice setup. I never leave my iPad in the car. Right now my kids share one screen however I could use a second. If iPad version 2 is significantly better next year then I will just get that and use both when I'm in the car.

I hadn't got as far as planning what the 2nd screen would be, I'm trying to work out if the iPad can drive both itself and a 2nd screen, it appears it cannot unless I jailbreak it
