I live in Ottawa Ontario and I am planning on driving to New York this weekend to buy the iPad as the relase date here has not even been announced yet. I am just wondering if these things are selling out or if they are still pretty easy to get your hands on. Also, is there any difference in buying it from an Apple Store over Best Buy (BB is closer to the boarder for me)? Lastly, I am assuming that the Apple Store here will honor the warrantly, but has anybody from Canada tested this yet?

Driving to New York from Canada to get iPad - are they easy to find?

Go to the Buffalo store in the Walden Galleria mall. They have both an Apple Store and Best Buy right across from each other.
Apple will honour the warranty; AppleCare is an international warranty. I've done it several times with iPods. The iPad is expected to launch April 24th in Canada, so if you don't want to wait, the Walden Galleria mall is probably your closest, quickest option.

Did you check your local listing like kijiji or craiglist? There are people who drove down and bought a few to re-sell for profit. I bought mine this way for Cdn $700 (16 GB). Here's my math: Apple Canada will likely sell this for Cdn $550 and so ($620 with 13% tax). How much do you think it's worth to save you from taking the road trip plus gas? Don't forget, when you cross the Canadian boarder with your new iPad, they could nail for 13% duty.
I don't have much experience with cross boarder shopping. I am curious, do you declare your iPad at custom? I drove down to Port Huron a few years ago to shop (the only time) with my family. Didn't buy anything, and told the custom officer that the booth that. She pulled us over and have our car searched. So I don't understand how people can bring a dozen iPads back to sell for profit.
they dont check all the time ... specially if u say u are going for a weekend or so ... my suggestion is buy it online with a pick up in store option at best buy that way they will have it in stock ! and if u use discover card you get 5% cashback too !
In other words, you don't declare the iPad, and risk paying big fines for smuggling, and the fines to get your impounded car back (smuggling vessel).
I always declare when I cross, and I have never been charged the taxes. Even when I spent $600 on a computer, they just said "Have a good day!". Depends entirely on who you get, and they respect honesty.
