I was driving in the car today with my iPhone headphones in my right ear so if I get a call I don't have to go digging in my pocket while I'm on the road.

I began thinking about messaging. When you receive a text, it alerts you through the headphones, but you obviously have to take the phone out if you want to read and reply to the message.

It'd be nice if the Messages app was designed to recognize you received a text with your headphones plugged in (or recognization of a bluetooth connection), read your message to you (and who it's from), then give you the choice to reply with a click, or double-click to automatically call this person back.

With the voice commands now prevalent, you could click once to reply, being prompted to talk, with the phone recording and translating your words into a text. It would then read it back to you for errors, and send with a click.

I'm sure you would end up sending incoherent messages once in awhile, but if you just were able to say and send "Driving, call me," or "Yes," "No," etc., without having to take your phone out of your pocket while driving or walking, I think it would be beneficial.

Could an app be designed to handle all of this?

I've actually often thought about this and thought that it would be one of the logical next steps for the iPhone team. The ability for speech to text conversion would be so useful and popular, and would be someting new and different for mobile devices.

I'm for the idea... my friend actually installed something on his BlackBerry Curve. I don't know what it was, but as soon as I sent him a text, it said who it was from and it read the text.

The only problem I see is with those annoying friends that everyone has who send text messages with incomplete words.

You'd hear the message, it wouldn't make sense, so you dig for your iPhone in your pocket to read a text... then you crash :p

Haha, way to be optimistic. Nevertheless I think it'd be really useful and could probably easily be implemented.
