If I recall correctly, that's better than the Palm Pre launch.

I'm going a bit off-topic here, but I see that Motorola sells Droids outright for $599. Does anyone know whether they're locked to Verizon?

How many Droids will stick?

I'm thinking the real question is how many of the Droids will stick? I picked one up and will play with it for 30 days. It would take a lot to make me give up my iPhone. A couple of things I've noticed so far:

1)I don't get the slider keyboard - its actually more difficult to type on than the iPhone in landscape mode. And it just adds weight.

2)I really like the ability to run background apps. And contrary to popular belief, with several [network] apps running in the background the battery life appears to be about what the iPhone 3Gs is...

3)Its also nice to have the ability to have a more customized phone. Changing themes and adding wdigets is pretty neat...

4) On the other hand, nothing beats the iPhone for general ease of use. It so much easier to perform daily tasks with the iPhone than anything else I've used.

5) The vaunted Verizon coverage so far doesn't seem to be any better than AT&T. At my house, I have 1 bar Verizon where I had 5 bars AT&T. At work, they're both pretty much full strength. I watch them both as I wander around and they both vary in strength.

Anyway, just a few early observations.

That's a good point. I am another person who picked one up, and just because I was impressed with the initial impression it gave me (and because I had the spare cash). I, however, am seriously considering keeping it, and mostly for reasons 1, 2 and 5.

1) I love the slider keyboard. Don't get me wrong, I fly on my iPhone's keyboards (landscape and portrait), but am able to go even faster on the Droid keyboard, and enjoy the use of physical keys, which I didn't think would make a difference. That's all a matter of personal preference, though.

2) Background apps are very very nice... 'Nuff said.

5) The verizon network where I spend my days is significantly better than the AT&T network.

It will be interesting to see how Verizon's relationship with Android plays out as they prepare to roll out more 2.0 phones (like the HTC Passion). I also wonder how their relationship with Google and the Android platform will effect the prospect of a Verizon based iPhone.

Where else you going to use the droid? It only works on CDMA and EVDO.

There are three carriers providing CDMA where I live (although one won't activate foreign phones, and I'll need to ask the other two, but want to find out whether the phone itself will work first).

I tried to find a spot on the Motorola site to ask the question. You could persue that a bit more.

My _guess_ is that it would be locked to Verizon, as otherwise many people here in the USA would be swapping Sprint and Verizon phones all the time. (It's done a little bit, but only with ROM hacks for voice only, IIRC.)

However, I've read that Motorola has said the Droid is coming to New Zealand ... sometime... perhaps early 2010?

I wasn't aware of that, so I'll wait for an official release (and, of course, see how it stacks up with other offerings once the time comes). I'm a little concerned that the local official release may be a 900/2100 MHz WCDMA device, which won't work with any of the networks offering service where I live (Vodafone has a compatible network, but not where I live). I'll need to wait and see though.

Anyway, I think I've sidetracked this topic enough :)

I hope that the Droid does good, my reasoning is:

I want apple to give us the ability to theme our iPhone..... Thats all I want lol.... Apple could sell themes in iTunes...

I just hope it gives Apple a run for there money and gives us users a change that we need
