I hardly ever use the data service on my iPhone and was wanting to save the 30.00 data charges so see if this would work. Call ATT and tell them i broke my iphone and moved my SIM card to another phone (I have an old ATT Blackberry) and want to have just voice only on the line now. Then after they make the change to voice only move the SIM back to my iphone and use it without data? Would that work or do they have a way of knowing what type of device the SIM card is in?

Trust me, there are kids that totally just want an iPhone for the "status". I work for Rogers, and this one time this kid, I swear he was only 13, came in with his dad and wanted to buy an 16GB iPhone 3GS outright, and get this: put it on Pay As You Go! My coworker asked him why he wanted the iPhone, and he straight up said, "I just want it for the status symbol", and I over hear it and give my coworker the most awkward look lol.

It will work. Have them put a block on data on your acount also when u call them.

Correction - it may work. They can absolutely see what type of phone he's using, and if it were any other smartphone the plan would be slapped back on immediately. With the iPhone though, sometimes they add the plan, sometimes they don't. All you can do is roll the dice and see what happens in your case.

BTW. Don't tell them you'll be using a Blackberry. You'll only end up paying for a Blackberry data plan that doesn't work with your iPhone.

That's why you put your sim in a regural nonsmart phone and call.
They will not slap on anything on your account without your permission. I don't know where you get this.

Well, technically you did when you signed the contract that has data plan as requirement for iphone.

I know your supposed to but many people don't and get away with it.
Never heard of a case where AT&T automaticly added the plan without a customers consent.
They could in the future but for now it doesn't happen. I know many people with iPhones on AT&T without a data plan.

Although your scenarios may be true, but when you signed the contract for the iphone, you have given consent for the data plan. So for you to manually remove it at one point or another, AT&T does have the right to add it back on when they detect iphone usage.

I think your logic of consent is applicable only toward additional items, such as roadside assistance and others that you have not given explicit consent in the past.

I understand what your saying. Even though they could do it I never heard of a case where they did that's all I'm saying.

Be very careful. When did you sign up for iphone data plan? If you signed up before September 6th, you should be fine.

But those who signed up after September, may get blackberry or smart phone data plans automatically added to their line. Make sure you have a smartphone exclusion in your account. The only way to note it is to call ATT up and ask them.

So when did you sign up for the iphone data plan? If it's after September and you pop your SIM into another smartphone (Blackberry, they will automatically add $30 data plan)

If you have active service with AT&T then you've agreed to their terms of service, which means you've agreed that you can't have a smartphone without data, and that AT&T can add data automatically if you don't have it. *As I said, with any other phone they'll slap the plan in palace in a heartbeat. *For some reason with the iphone sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.

Regarding the exclusion SOC - don't waste your time. *Iphones don't get it, because they've always been required to carry data. *Even if you had the exclusion, changing phones will count as a new activation, subject to the new rules, and automatically removes the exclusion. *You can call and argue for getting it readded, but you're likely SOL. *Unless something has changed no one that you'll actually talk to is able to add the exclusion; not a CSR, not a manager, not retentions. *All they can do is submit a case requesting it be readded, and in most situations the response from the team that handles those cases will basically be "to bad so sad".

as soon as you put the sim back in the iPhone AT&T will know you're back on an iPhone and wil automatically begin charging u for a data plan.

My friend bought an iPhone off a buddy of mine and he has never been charged for the data plan. Before he bought it, I told him that he probably would be charged for data, and he was fine with that. Well, they don't charge him and he would rather not pay for it anyways. He just uses wifi for data.

Maybe AT&T requires the customer to sign on to the iPhone data plan.

Funny I know about 8 people that use iphones without a data plan on AT&T for a very long time and they never had that happen to them.
They just blocked carrier data on the iphone and use the internet thru wifi only.
Love the assumptions on this thread :)

So you're saying its not possible?
I know about the TOS agreement and that they could slap the data plan any time they want to any iphone detected in their system. What I was talking about was real life experience, not about the legal aspect of it.
All I said they could but they havent done for years. They might bug a few customers with texts telling them to pick the appropriate data plan while other times they dont bug others that have the data completelly blocked and they dont use carrier data at all with their iphones.
