Dropped & dented my beloved AIR :(

it wasnt a big drop just 0.5m or so, it slipped off my bedside table and i even managed to break the fall a little with my foot or it would have been worse.

but now there's a little dent on the top casing behind the LED, or rather right on the outer casing bottom edge (edge underneath apple logo)... so its a nightmare cos it gets in the way of opening and closing it, so it clicks slightly. it seems pretty minor & cosmetic and doesn't look like serious structural damage. machine is working fine.

i guess i gotta get it replaced by i just know that i'm gonna get shafted... has anyone had it replaced before? any indication of the cost? or is it possible to bring it somewhere to have the dent restored? i could live with the scratches but the dent is quite unsightly and the clicking thing might just get worse.

Which is it? cosmetic or structural? Because a dent on the top that somehow gets in the way of the lid opening seems more than cosmetic.

Can you post pics? It seems pointless to discuss without pics. As for repairs, accidental damage is never covered by Apple. Do you have homeowners insurance (as someone mentioned)? Your deductible is hopefully low and should be easy enough to pay to get a new laptop.

Dude seriously. You need to start reading the posts. I get wanting to post as much as possible and as fast as possible, but basically you're just spewing out random thoughts. He clearly stated there was something wrong, while he didn't commit to it being structural or cosmetic, there is a bit more here than a "scar of love".

I have read it, it might work it's self out over time, i have seen it many times, and yes, photos would help.

I bought my MBA 4 weeks ago. I was all excited and immediately ran off the the Software Commons at the University of Toronto to get some discounted software. I then put the MBA in my knapsack and without realizing I hadn't zipped it up, I whipped around and out flew the laptop.
All dented (although it worked just fine). I was sick.
And this happened the very day after I took delivery of the MBA.

Anyway, both the bottom and top of the case were damaged. I took it to the UofT Computer Shop and they gave me a discounted price to repair it.
The total was $1175!!!!!
The top case only comes with the LCD screen--ie: you cannot purchase the case without the screen. So that came to $700 just for the top. The bottom aluminum shell was only about $170. Then there was 2-3 hours of labour and taxes.

I bought the MBA on a platinum VISA card (for exactly this reason). My home insurance said they would pay but I have a $500 deductable. The VISA insurance covered the $500 and my home he rest.

What a nuisance and a scare. I know own an Incase cover and am really careful with the machine.
I must admit, though, I was surprised at the amount of damage caused by the accident.

Well, the laptop is entirely flimsy to some degree. It's so thin and light. I know I was walking around the house yesterday looking for my plug while I was holding it and I nearly tossed it on the couch. Not that it would have hurt much, but I seem to forget. Coming from a 4-year old powerbook, this MB Air is far too light!

Take it in for a fix. It will only cost $975, well worth it!

Is it like selling a damaged and repaired car? Do you disclose that you paid for over $1000 in repairs to the product you are selling? Or do you not say anything and sell it as 'like new' condition?

Since it's accidental damage and therefore not covered by Apple's warranty, you're likely to get a better rate from MacService for a simple case replacement. Case parts are $275-$295 and the screen replacement is $445. They'll send you a box. I've done business with them in the past, and I've been very pleased with the results, so I can confidently recommend them!

Not sure if this applies to you, but as I have posted before, if you bought your MBA with an Amex recently (the last 90 days), you're covered through buyer protection:

Purchase Protection: Protects covered items for up to 90 days from the date of purchase if it is stolen or accidentally damaged.​

if you bought it recently with another CC, check your terms and conditions...

all my electronics purchases go on my Amex for this very reason. good luck...

At the risk of sounding holier-than-thou, your suggestion borders on illegal at worst, and unethical at best. I would just file it against my homeowner's insurance, and most likely VISA/MC would cover deductible, as has been suggested. I purchase everything, small or large, on a credit card, always.

I don't give any credit to Apple store employees, but then again they're not retards. Clearly you have no idea what "burden of proof" means short of doing a quick google search.

I hope I never see you complain about Apple pricing because when you do this, you're directly contributing to higher prices due to theft. And yes, it is basically theft.

I've read all the posts here, and I agree with most....however, I strongly disagree with the post that suggests you take it back and state it was the condition was the way you bought it. How do we expect any retailer to stay in business if every one did this? They would surely all go out of business or we all would have to pay much higher prices to absorb such losses. We all have to take responsibility for our actions. I am sorry about your dent or any other dents or problems folks have with their macbook air. I think coming online and asking for help is great. But to expect a free ride for something that happens is not a responsible thing. We just have to be careful with our beloved apples! Treat them with care. Happy New Year to all.
