DSL and Windows file sharing ?

Unfortunately, I don't know much about networking...

I am using a DSL modem on my Mac using PPPoE. When I want to share files with my PC, I need to change the TCP/IP settings to DCHP which means I have to disconnect from the internet.

Is there any way to use a DSL modem at the same time I network a Mac and a PC ? Do I need a router to do this ? Currently both machines just plug into an Ethernet hub and share the same modem.

Go get a router with a firewall. It will protect your systems as well as make your files more secure. They are cheap to buy and will do make you life easier. Linksys, Netgear, D0Link, etc. are all good brands.

Thanks. So forgive my ignorance, but is the router going to connect to the modem (using PPPoE or whatever) and the computers accessing the router using 'standard' IP's, thus solving my network problem ? I think I might have some reading to do on the subject...

Yes, the modem will connect to the router. From there you will have your standard Ethernet from the router. You will only be using one IP from your provider, but all machines will have their own address inside of you network. The router will perform NAT, so all machines will be using the IP address your provider gives you. You can even go wireless if you wanted.

If you are unsure of what to get, try contacting your provider.
