So the imac's displayport is capable of passing DTS-HD MA since it uses displayport 1.2. If I connect a displayport to hdmi cable and sent it into my receiver will it be able to pass codecs like dts-hd ma?

Never tried dtshd ma but regular dts goes through fine. What software player in osx will even pass through dtshd ma?

Since bluray is the only source for dtshd ma, I just use my dedicated blu Ray player. Where are you getting these dtshd ma files?

Isn't VLC capable of passing all audio signals? Anyways, i get my files from tehconnection.eu, a private torrent site. Are you passing regular dts through the displayport or the digital output via the headphone jack.

There is no software that I'm aware of that knows to send HD audio (DTS-MA or True-HD) out the MDP.

I did some research on my own, and to my surprise, you are right. HOWEVER: you can send uncompressed 8-channel sound through the MDP. So if you have the right software, the time to do it, and the hard drive space, you can convert the audio and pass it through a receiver after all.

However, for a 100 min movie, this would give you 12.8GB only for audio. Seems we just have to settle for regular dts.

I am passing DTS through mdp to hdmi adapter

If VLC could handle DTS MA and TrueHD with high-bitrate video that would be cool. Don't think it can though. If it could and Apple allowed MDP output on a Mac Mini, they probably would be flying off the shelves. I'd buy a Server Mini in a heartbeat.
