As you (well if you looked in the Marketplace) might know i bought a 2.3Ghz DP PowerMac last month (Sept 7th) and Apple just released their new kit with PCIe and DDR2. PCIe is my main motivaion at the moment for thinking of 'switching'.

My PM 2.3 has 1.5Gb of RAM and a GeForce 6800 GT. I have had an offer on my system and im thinking of putting the money to a Dual Core 2.0 system with PCIe/DDR2 ect (spec it up a little of course) and i dont lose any money and gain PCIe so i can add a nice 7800GTX when im a bit richer. Im going to assume the current crop of Mac AGP Graphics cards is going to stop and die at 6800 GT?

Does this make sense? Im thinking that the Dual Core 2.0 should be just as good as the Dual Processor 2.3Ghz with it being on the die and not two seperate units. Im sure it will be cat and mouse with the 2.0 being better in say memory intensive tasks and the DP 2.3 better with hard computing.

Thanks

Thought bubble is true - just wanted some opinions. And well, im wondering if its worthwhile idea or a big waste of time.

Is the 2.0 much slower than the 2.3? I guess im a bit skeptical of the 2.0 because previously the 2.0 was slightly cut-down (less RAM/PCI not PCI-X ect). I have not heard much information on the new systems - does the 2.0 have anything missing compared to the 2.3? (apart from 300Mhz).

Also do we have an ETA on when Apple will be offering the 7800GT as a BTO?

Rumor goes that they were having problems with it and that it should be shipping within 2 weeks into November or so. It will be offered and not cancelled like some people are saying.

Working for MI-6
I think that you might want to hold onto your 2.3GHz DP Power Mac G5- which should be faster than one of the new dual-core 2GHz Power Mac G5s.

PCI-Express while in theory offers nice performance increases, is barely faster than 8x AGP currently.

But, if you are going for a new dual-core Power Mac G5, then go for the 2.3GHz model- so that you don't lose any speed. Just my two cents... :)

FSB speeds are different between the two.
