Dual Boot Mavericks and Yosemite?

Hi,

I have a Western Digital Thunderbolt Duo configured as JBOD, and I am going to replace those hard disks with two 512GB SSDs - installing one SSD with Mavericks and the other with Yosemite. I want to do this because I want to try out Yosemite for, say, 3 months first. I would like to have the iMac internal Micintosh HD keeps storing my emails, iPhoto library, iTunes library etc.

But would this cause files out-of-sync issues? For example, if today I use Mavericks rip a CD and tomorrow I use Yosemite, will I still see the "new songs" in iTunes?

Just set each installation of iTunes to use the same library, the same for iPhoto, etc. For email, if it's server based like gmail or iCloud, the accounts will stay in sync automatically via the server. If you actually download your messages into your mail client then they will not be in sync unless you tell each Mail client to keep messages on the server and then delete them later (say a period of time where you'll have been in both Mavericks & Yosemite.

But those libraries aren't cross compatible iirc and neither program look for changes to their existing libraries on startup or at any other time.

So in short yes you would 100% guaranteed have at least some sync issues.

You can manually enter the iTunes library in preferences, iPhoto you can select by launching and holding down the option key. If there's only one iPhoto library on the system and spotlight has it indexed then iPhoto will open with it.

Only if you use the same iTunes library from a single source (i.e. place the iTunes library folder on either Mavericks or Yosemite partition, but not both), and both Mavericks and Yosemite must have the same iTunes version, in this case, iTunes 12 option-linked to the same source...

And also, avoid using iTunes to sync your Contacts and Calendars from your Mac to your iDevices... Use iCloud instead...
