I recently got a new hard drive and I want to install Mac OS X 10.5 and Windows XP on it.

Is it possible to format one partition with the Mac GUID for OS X and the other partition as a Master Record for Windows XP?

Or does Mac OS X/Windows XP dual-booting has to be done through the bootcamp?

If you are dealing with a single hard drive system then the thing to do is format the new drive (Disk Utility) as a single partition using the GUID option. Then print out the BootCamp Installation instructions and follow them to create a partition for windows. This method is documented and works.

I know this can be done in boot camp.

I am finding out whether or not OS X/Windows XP dual boot can be done with two partitions using the Disk Utility.
