Dual core or Duo Core?

i have the same question. should i keep my new Dual Core 2ghz? i'm thinking it might be a better idea after looking at more benchmarks of these iMac intels, i might have jumped the gun.

I do run photoshop an average of a few times per week. I don't know how much I'd miss the snappiness of it however, if i got an intel.

Mostly what I do is encode video files with podner and transport them to my ipod, then i use sound studio and audacity a lot. don't really use iphoto, imovie or any of the iLife apps.

What's your opinions?

If the computer you have now is doin' it for you, I really doubt you'll see a major increase in performance with the Intel chips. I would just keep what you have, at least until the Intel PowerMacs come out!

Or, alternately, send my your PowerMac, and go buy a new iMac.

You will hardly notice a difference in the performance of the Core Duo compared to the Dual core G5.

On that note, why is everyone acting like their brand new G5 system should just be thrown out the window already? Jesus Christ! I can't believe the amount of peopel on here that think the world has just come to an end as soon as Apple updates one of its products. So you don't have THE top of the line computer anymore, and who doesn't always want the top of the line? I know it's nice, but so is the G5.

The G5 will serve its users very well for the coming years, and will be able to stand up to the test of time. Then it will be time to upgrade to an Intel Mac. Until then, enjoy your super-fast G5.

Very true spencecb- many people feel that their G5 based Macs are instantly outdated with the release of the Macs with the new Intel Core Duo. You are absolutely right when you say that the G5 is still a very fast chip that can last many users for years to come.

Pro switching: with the Imac, you get the same performance from the intel dual core, as well as a monitor, for much less money. There's not much of a performance difference. But you save a lot of money.

Not what MacWorld is reporting.

If you use pro applications (Photoshop et. al.) under Rosetta you look to be taking a big performance hit on the intel iMac compared to a single G5 iMac

So don't dump the Dual Processor or Dualcore G5's yet, gang. Wait and see what happens once Adobe an all of them get their binaries sorted.

so my Dual Core 2ghz w/1.5 gb RAM should perform better than the iMac 2ghz duo right?

From all the reviews ive seen people are still much happier with the G5's then the intels for now. Still down the road, id still buy a Dual Core G5 over the intel, i switched to Apple for the G Processor. I mean i got a mini with an older G4, but still, i cant wait to save and get a G5!

64 Bit?

Hey this may seem sorta unrelated but has anyone else noticed that these new chips are NOT 64 bit? I thought Apple was pushing with the whole G5 64 bit era thing..... I'm suprised the Core Duo is in the iMac, i thought they would be reserved for notebooks only. The real desktop core equivalent is the Pentium D...which is alot more powerful.

The G5 is apple's high end market... i think considering the amount of value it is worth to them, they may get a more custom chip built from Intel. Maybe something built on a Itanium base with 64 bit support. Rushing out Powermacs now loaded with quad core duo's would just be a waste.

The reason they havent replaced their G5's also could have something to do with the fact that their Pro applications are not going to be intel compatible until Feburary/March time at the earliest. Imagene if you went out and bought a intel quad duo core, took it home and learnt you can't use Final Cut on it for another good couple of weeks. Apple would look terrible.

Wait untill the Apple Pro application support is avaible, i promise you something will happen then. And probably something very different to what we have now.

ok so i am still undecided, I take back my "I'm keeping the Dual Core system" for now. I went to the local Apple reseller and used their 1.83 intel imac. i didn't really get a chance to do anything major however. The web browsing IS better and faster I think. There is even a slight delay in my Dual Core 2ghz PowerMac with 1.5gb RAM and the intel iMac seemed to open sites and various tabs quicker. It just had 512mb RAM.

Thing is, I bought the PowerMac after Christmas, but I haven't paid it off yet. In fact, I haven't paid but $50 off! And I also got a Gateway 21-inch HD widescreen monitor for $550. So my thinking is that are the Dual Core 2ghz $600 better than the new intel iMac 2ghz Duo? Because that is what I'd be saving if I went with the intel imac 20-inch.

I qualify myself as not the typical consumer, I'm a student who works in digital media but doesn't use apps like FCP or Logic. I occasionally use Photoshop, but mostly use third party apps like Podner (which IS universal) and Audio Hijack Pro, Toast, Office, etc. So I am trying to consider if saving $600 is worth it to downgrade to the Intel iMac 2ghz Core Duo.

I love hearing you all's opinions

If you're a student I would imagine that imac's would be sufficient for your needs. Powermacs are more for expandability. If you can bring back your items and get an imac instead at least you will have it for many more years to come.

It's my guess that it will be at least 1-2 more years before you see any improvement with the adobe suite. As it stands the machines that are currently out are more for consumers. Adobe caters to graphic design houses so it would make more sense for them to have the apps ready when there is a major shift to intel power macs. As i said 1-2 years, take my word for it.

Keep it

I say keep the PM DC as it does everything well right now. Get an Intel mac when they convert the Pm's and all software is Universal.

well i don't really have a ton, put stuff on credit cards. it would be nice to have $500 extra to put towards other payments like bills, etc.

I think I'm going for the intel iMac 20inch and selling the monitor and PowerMac
