Dual Display not working after High Sierra update

Ever since updating to High Sierra 10.13.3, I have not been able to use two displays unless they are mirrored. When I uncheck 'Mirror Displays' then my main display on my laptop goes blank and only my external monitor works, but I cannot get to the applications on my main display, and I have to gather windows to mirror the display again.

I have tried resetting my SMC controller.

processor: 2.6Ghz Intel Core i7
ram: 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1 GB Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB
