hi for Mac to recognize as a dual gpu set up must the gpu be also of the same brand? Or same chip/gpu id is good enough?

My understanding is NO.

In MacOS, 2 graphic cards are quite independent. e.g. You can instal the GT120 (Nvidia) with almost any supported GPU (including AMD card).
 
Sorry, I meant for apps like compressor or fcpx. I just got a r9 380 and 380x. They don't seems to running processing together is parallel as much as the d500z
