Wouldn’t it be interesting if Apple came out with a 24” external monitor with the same physical form factor (size, shape and dimensions) as the current SoC iMac for use as an 2nd monitor for the existing iMac.

No hint at all of this happening, just thinking it would look pretty sharp.

That would be nice, and people were asking for that for a long time now, even before AS Macs.

Better yet, maybe Apple release a 27" or 30" iMac with matching monitor.

Even better yet, maybe Apple bring back the Target Display Mode that was on the Late 2009 to Mid 2010 27" iMacs, and the Mid 2011 to Early 2014 iMacs, enabling iMacs to be used as external monitors.

The Late 2009 to Mid 2010 27" iMacs could be used as external monitors to non-Apple equipment, but after the TB iMacs were released (Mid 2011 to Early 2014), TDM only worked with other Macs with Thunderbolt.

TDM was removed with the 4k and 5K iMacs, which was reportedly because of a technical limitation with TB2, but could have came back with TB3 iMacs. I guess Apple didn't want people repurposing their older iMacs....

Probably won't happen, but maybe it could.

I would be excited about this also. I've pretty much decided that I would want a hi-def 24 inch display when I replace my iMac with a Studio or a Mini in the next year or so. Surprised to see how few offerings there actually are in this space from quality manufacturers. A 24 inch version of the Studio display for $1000 or less would be ideal.

If we're dreaming, how about an iMac with an ultra-wide screen? Embracing separates led me to a 5K 40" ultra-wide and I could never go back to the typical near-square-shaped screens of my former iMacs or similar. Instead of 2 screens side-by-side, how about one very wide screen that is like 2 screens?

On embracing Silicon, I needed full Windows too for some clients (Windows ARM is not full Windows), so another reason I chose a NOT-Apple monitor is for additional inputs, so one could be a dedicated PC input too. A bonus to the ultra-wide is that it can split the screen so that Mac can run on one half and PC on the other, yielding what very much feels like the old iMac screen times 2, side by side with no border splitting the two (as it would be with 2 monitors)... as if I'm booted into macOS AND bootcamp on 2 iMacs that happen to be missing their right and left bezels respectively.

As someone who loved a few 27" iMacs for many years, if I could ever be moved to come back to an iMac, it would have to be an ultra-wide iMac now. There's no going back for me. Those dreaming of 2 screens might want to consider ultra-wides instead: get the expansive screen R.E. minus the bezel breaks.
