I’ve been running my m1 16” MacBook Pro in clamshell mode with a cal digit ts4 dock and one screen via display port and a second via thunderbolt to display port adapter
when using two of the same monitor I get problems where the secondary occasionally wakes first then primary comes on and takes over
problem here is all apps from secondary move to primary and then the bottom of the second screen isn’t useable as it thinks the space is used for the dock
found a workaround for the dock space issue I have to check to hide dock then uncheck and it’s useable but annoying to do this often

caldigit made suggestion this issue known Mac problem of same two monitor models via single tb connection …so I decide to get a nice new lg ultra wide and keep one 27” secondary ….fixed the dock bug but now every time I wake from sleep the secondary comes up first and all apps move

I ran dual same monitors forever on an old Mac mini on high sierra never any issues

is there any real fix for this other than turning off letting displays sleep completely ? Which i would need to enable when I use out of the dock
or is this just a Monterey problem ? Maybe the issue is trying to use clamshell ?

Put the cursor at the very bottom of the dock-less screen, and the dock will pop onto that one.

On my iMac, I have an external monitor, and occasionally it wakes before the builtin screen, and nothing bad happens. *shrug*

Maybe try leaving your MB open, and using the builtin screen for clock, or Music, something rather statis, and see if that effects the screen startup dance?

Thanks yeah I guess I can try non clamshell mode just to see, funny thing is I get more issues on two different monitors than two of same type
another thing I might try is use secondary monitor off the mbp hdmi outside the dock

the funny part about the mac OS dock moving is it actually moves back to the primary screen and then the second screen has the same size space unusesble it’s so weird

Which version of macOS are you using? What you just described is not at all happening to me, although I have an iMac, if it's happening to you, it should/could be happening to me too, and aside from a couple hiccups, it's been really a great experience and I'd recommend 2 monitors for most people. I went into this with the idea that the external should be as close to the builtin screen as possible, and that's probably the reason you are having problems. Try use the builtin. Maybe switch the hub/adapter you are using. Look for a driver update from the manufacturer. Hmm...

Good luck.

Monterey , but I am not surprised your iMac is fine since it’s different hardware and I’m also using a dock
something tells me it’s a combination of m1, dock and os

I am using a dock for the external. I did have a problem where the Big Sur update caused it to fail. It looked like it was tearing across the screen, and at times it would look stable, and then something would start and half the time it would clear, and half the time it would get worse. I ended up opening a case w/Apple and they said it was a 'known problem with some docks' and said I should check the vendor because the chipset in my dock was one that usually needed a driver update. Not used to needing driver updates, I went to the vendor, and sure enough, the chipset manufacturer had released a driver update. So much for Apple automagically updating drivers.

Yes, I do use a dock, and have had issues with it. Hope you can find a solution.
