as of now, there is no way to get 16xx by 12xx on 2 external monitors on a macbook pro correct?

ive read that the matrox adapter only will support 1080 by 960 on 2 dual monitors.

Don't arse about with crappy adapters that aren't supported. Bust out the 30" ACD and revel in it's enormity. Seriously - it's bloody huge.

no, the MBP will run the 30" ACD at full res. (2560x1600), side by side the internal MBP screen (1440x900 or 1680x1050).

To be specific, you need Dual-Link DVI, which the MBP has.

DVI: A single plug digital monitor connection, which can drive monitors up to 1920x1200 pixles.

Duallink DVI (DDL): A single plug digital monitor connection, whixh can drive monitors up to 3840x2400 pixles.

There is no such thing as Dual DVI. It is the expression for two DVI plugs. Duallink DVI looks excactly the same as DVI, but can drive screens with twice as many vertical and horizontal pixels. Apple current lineup has the following support:

MacBook: Mini-DVI (can be expanded to DVI through a $19 adapter from Apple).
iMac: Mini-DVI (can be expanded to DVI through a $19 adapter from Apple).
MacMini: DVI.
MacBook Pro: Duallink DVI.
MacPro: 1xDVI and 1xDuallink DVI. Can if upgraded to X1900XT or Quadro FX4500 have 2xDuallink DVI.

20" ACD: Requires DVI.
23" ACD: Requires DVI.
30" ACD: Rquires daullink DVI.

Also 2.3 mpx vs. 4 mpx, but I competely agreew with you. The 30" is overkill, and unless you just wanna go gung ho with latets and greatest, a 23" is whatever will serve you and your wallet best.

The 30" ACD's are just fantastic. I currently work on a Dell 670 with dual 20" LCD's, but am dumping (not literally, it'll just get used less) this for a Mac Pro with a single 30".

Dual monitors are overrated.

You mean overrated or just not as good as one big Phat screen like a 30" ADC?

I love using dual monitors whenever I can, it's a huge help when workingon lots of stuff or across documents/projects. Much better than one screen so I'm not sure it's overrated. However, given the choice of 1x30 screen or 2x23, I'd definitely go for the 1x30".

Of course, wouldn't complain with 2x30!

Don't get me wrong, I love the 30" monitor. But for $1000 I could get a 500GB HD, 2GB of RAM, and the ATI 1900XT. You can always upgrade monitors next year after tax refund
