Dual profiles -one for me, one for the wife.

Anyone have dual profiles running?
Are they easy to manage / setup?

The wife always complains that I delete or move everything so heard you can set up two customised profiles

1. One so you can have your desktop, apps, shortcuts etc different for each person

Is this true and is it ok to use and set up?
I dont get our iMac 24"until this week, so just doing my homework, and couldn't find any discussions on the board in relation to this

Create a user account each. You will have your own settings for everything. Works perfectly. If you want you can turn on fast user switching so as you don't have to log out every time...

OS X was made to be used with multiple accounts its a core feature. you will have your own home folders and all your settings and preferences will stored in your own libraries. all the main computer settings for every account like network settings, security, printers etc will be stored in the main library.

One thing to note is that this will give you separate iTunes, iPhoto etc libraries. There are ways to share these: a quick look in the Guides, or a Google search will tell you what you need to know...

Cool, seperate itunes accounts etc is fine, or better to be honest
So all the main things like networks, MS office etc will be the same for either will they?

What if you changed a set up on the network under one profile, would it change for the other?

MS office will work fine. but you will have different profiles each so for example Word will look different when you open it if you change the default layout.

the network is system wide so will be the same for all users. the admin controls it.

These proprietary libraries actually keep me from using iTunes and iPhoto much. I have just put all shared stuff in a shared folder and link to it in the finder side-bar. Works like a charm and if I ever need to change platform...

Do you have some quick tip on how to share iCal calender-events? All the things I found so far are either a hassle (install iCal-server) or cost quite a bit of money (MobileMe).

Exactly. Otherwise I would leave my kids at the 5yo crap pc.

Just enable fast user switching.

Set up hot corners to put the machine to sleep when you fling the mouse into one corner, along with requiring a password to wake from sleep should help out.

At least this way, when you walk away from the machine -- zip the mouse over and sleep the machine -- and it'll bring up the box to switch users automatically when you or she goes to log back into where you all left off.
