Dual Screen or Single?

For those of you with external screen, do you keep your macbook/pro closed or do keep it open and use it as second screen? And is running it on dual screen slow down your macbook/pro?

Im running my 12" powerbook as an extended desktop with my 20" screen, and it runs perfectly.

If this can run it ok then a macbook will have no problem.

Open, dual display with a 19" Dell monitor. If I had an ACD, or any widescreen monitor, I would probably keep it closed.

I have a Macbook, with a 19" widescreen monitor, but depending on what I am doing I usually keep it closed.

If I had an external screen hooked up I would run it closed so I get all the power of the video card (after all the X1600 isn't the most powerful in the world).
