Hey all - newbie to the forum but not to mac or iPhone.

I have a first generation iPhone, jailbroken but NOT unlocked. I am upgrading to the 3GS. Can I sync the information on the phone back to iTunes and then sync that same info to the 3GS, or do I need to un-jailbreak the phone to get a compatible sync? If I do need to un-jailbreak it first, how do I back up the information so that it syncs over to the un-jailbroken phones?

I will likely re-jailbreak and unlock my original iPhone when it's all over and sell it, but in the meantime I want my pics and other info off this phone and on my new 3GS.

Thanks!

There is no problem in backing up a jailbroken phone. However I would first uninstall/undo any major hacks you have, like a carrier logo, categories/poof, etc. because even if an iPhone isn't jailbroken, some things will be left behind (carrier logo can cause the name of the carrier to disappear, categories and poof causes apps to disappear).

Then you can backup as normal. Then the 3GS comes, after activating it, you should be able to restore from your old iPhone's backup.

Good to know - thank you! I don't have any major hacks so it sounds like it should be pretty simple.

I am in the same situation. How do I setup the new iPhone without using any trace of the original iPhones backup? I want to start completely fresh in case any remains of a jailbreak exist with an old backup. Thanks

Not sure what you are asking... Sounds like you just want to set it up as a new phone? Well, if so, just set it up as a new phone! Unless you are asking something else?

Yes, If I set it up as a new phone, when I sync, it won't copy any of the old iphone files?

No. Backups are the only thing that save things from your old iPhone. If you setup as a new iPhone, you won't restore from a backup. Syncing puts fresh data on your phone (music, apps, etc)

Thanks, So if I setup as new will I be able to sync my old App Store apps that I bought onto my new iPhone? Thanks for the help I have never changed iPhones before. I just don't want any traces of the old jailbreak on the new phone.
