Seeing as how the http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6061
talks about replacing PCI flash storage, would I need to use Time Machine to copy everything to an external drive to copy it back onto a bigger drive?

If I order a MP with the 256 pci flash, what is the best way to move onto a bigger 3rd Party TB drive? I know I can't just copy everything onto an external, because the new drive won't have any OS to allow me to copy that back.

I know this sounds really dumb. :(

Use a utility like Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your internal SSD to an external drive. Replace internal SSD. Boot from external drive, and clone it to new internal SSD.

Alternatively you could use Time Machine to back up the internal SSD, replace the internal drive, boot the system into Internet recovery mode and then restore the Time Machine backup from there.

for the clutter prone..

move everything you need off the original drive..
swap ssds.
fresh install os onto the new one via laptop..
re-populate the new drive
feel like you're organized for at least 6weeks or so.
