Dumb Question

Hi

Just taken delivery of new G5 - woohoo - after years of slogging it out on an old G3.

The problem is i'm still getting to grips with OSX - call me old fashioned if you like - The g5 come with Tiger installed, but i need to install System 9 on it as well. When i try and install 9 from the disk that came with the g5 it is telling me the install file cannot be opened cos the application blah blah can not be found. The install file is a .mpkg which is new to me.

Anyone got any ideas, as they would be greatly appreciated

OS 9 is no can doo only classic enviroment which i'm not too sure Tiger has

Right. Your G5 cannot dual boot in 9 and X. Tiger does have classic support, it might not be included in the standard install though. In that case, you need to install it.

I suggest just going cold turkey and getting used to X. In a week you'll wonder how you ever used 9. Seriously, if I use a pre-X system now it feels like I'm computing with one hand tied behind my back.

i forgot to say that it is the "classic 9" i am trying to install, as there are a couple of old 9 apps i need to have on for the short term.

I know it can be done because it is on installer disk 2 that came with the mac, but what i can't work out is why the installer won't load ?

do i need to download something to open an .mpkg file ?

when i want to install OS9 Classic on Panther i had to pop in the 2nd disk and then follow the instructions and untick all of the options except classic to get it to install

not sure if you can install direct from the .MPKG file

A wee suggestion: You'll get faster and more specific answers if you make your thread title specific to your problem. I realize you're new to MR so you havent seen the sheer volume of "Help!" "Dumb Question" and "Mac Problem" thread titles here....

Are you using the C-Key to bootup with the installer CD. Then you should be able to select the installation of Classic 9 only.

Where's your G3? Anyway, that's quite a leap forward.

If your running with the stock G5 install, all you need to do is copy a MacOS 9.2 system folder to the root of you new G5's HDD

If you can network your old G3 to your G5 then just copying you old system folder should do the trick, if not i seem to remember there being a system folder on the OS9 CD that it boots from during install, i honestly can't remember if thats a full folder or a reduced one purely to run the installer


And yes tiger has classic support just like panther etc.

Just in case,

This wont let you boot OS9, but it will allow you to run most programs under tiger

This is the procedure i've been following. But when i "Double-click the "Install Extra Software" icon" i get the message "cannot blah blah because the application that created it cannot be found"

Thanks for all the comments guys - just to let you know that i have cracked it - more haste less speed.

I found the "installer" extension in the utilities folder (i think) and you install it through that off of the 2nd Tiger CD.

Hmm, that's odd, I just installed it from my old 10.3.5 restore discs that came with my iBook, double clicked on the "Install extra software" icon and it did it's thing - you might have a bung disc.

I would have left it with Tiger and tried to learn. Not many people are still stuck on OS9.
