I’ve used the free version of “Duplicate File Finder Remover” with success.

I just purchased the "Pro" version of "Duplicate File Finder" (Used to be called "Duplicate File Finder Remover") and have been amazed and more than happy with the results I'm getting. I've been sorting through old external drives and dumping files and folders on to more current external drives, and in the process realized just how much duplication there is, since I was delving way back into my earliest digital photography days, back before I thought carefully about organizing everything as I was going along. Anyway, I think for me this program is going to be a real time-saver! Still got a ways to go with my project but I can already see light at the end of what had seemed to be an awfully long and dark tunnel.....

It's pretty straightforward, actually. I had been concerned about the system perhaps removing, say, the same image that I had in my files in two different sizes (original RAW images out of my cameras and then resized jpegs and sometimes the same jpeg image cropped in different ways to create yet a third size) and the app handles those very nicely, showing me the duplicates that are found which are exactly the same, size and all. Files are arranged by categories and by size within that category. Photos, Movies, Music, Documents....
and then the user has the option to either automatically choose to remove one or can deselect and remove none, etc. One can also simply trust the system and automatically remove the duplicates without even viewing the candidates. The latter is the fastest way, of course.
Basically you drop the folder (or even an entire external drive!) into the indicated space, click "scan" and watch as the app goes to work scanning the folder and showing several bars for the different categories. Once that's finished, it shows a pie chart of the categories and then the user chooses how they want to do the process, by viewing the duplicates and manually or automatically choosing the ones to be removed, or allowing the system to do the whole thing automatically. In choosing to view and select manually, the images are shown, with their file names and sizes, and the user can select by clicking the box beside the image to either remove or retain. The automatic system shows the user the images and the boxes are already clicked for removal, with one box indicating that item is to be retained. The totally automatic system means that the viewer does not even need to view the duplicates at all, simply trusts the system and allows it to go ahead and instantly remove the items.
Once one has made the choices for removal, then another screen comes up for the actual deletion and the items start appearing in the trash bin. I scanned several folders (a couple of them very large ones) last night after I'd installed the program and I was more than pleased with the overall speed of the program and more importantly, the results. This is going to make my current project so much easier and quicker, with the outcome in the end being that I'll have much more space on my external drives that contain older archived files. It certainly will make the organizational piece of my project go a lot faster since I won't be having to deal with duplicates everywhere! Once I get finished with this project, I'm also going to run the app on the folders that are in my computers, too, and clean them up a bit as well.....

This stuff is addictive!!! I've just worked on some more folders and found that there is a handy instruction tool when you click on the small "i" in the upper right hand corner of the "Drop Folder Here" page.... Takes you to the website, where there is useful information.
