I've had an iPhone 3G since November, and remember when I got it seeing posts about dust getting under the glass. My iPhone didn't seem to have it, or at least I didn't notice it. However, recently, I've noticed a fair amount of dust under there, including one right in the middle of the phone that's blocking about 3 pixels or so. It's really annoying to look at. Anyway, I guess I have two questions. One, did the dust really just get under there or shift inside to be more obvious, or have was the dust always there and I never noticed it. I can't look at my phone without seeing it now. Two, will Apple exchange my phone under the warranty for this? It seems like it's a default in the product, but is it covered or do I just have to make due?

I had the exact problem. Two weeks ago I went to the Apple store and got it repaired for free. I was hoping for a new phone, but the "genius" put in a completely new screen. They'll take care of you at the Apple store. That's been my experience.

By no means should you "just make due". With a phone that cost as much as iPhone does, you should not expect or stand for dust under the screen. I took my jailbroken 3g back because of dust under the screen.... they kinda gave me guff about it being JB'd and I pretty much lost it. Informing them the software changes I made to the phone had nothing to do with the hardware issue of their $500 phone having dust under the screen. After much back and forth I did get a replacement that was every bit as crap as the one I replaced..... Oh well, my new 3gs seems to be ok.

Thanks for the advice. I'll head over to the Apple store tomorrow to get a new screen. I'm glad to hear it's no big deal, and that they won't replace the whole phone. I don't have a case for mine and sort of like the small scratches on the back of the phone, battle scars if you will. :D

One question though. I have the 16 gb iPhone, but way more music than that. As such, I manually sync music. Is there anyway to back up just the music I have on the iPhone now so I can easily sync it back in, or do I have to manually add each artist one by one.

If I've had my 3GS for eight days by the time I visit an Apple Store to get it exchanged since there's metal under the screen, will I just get a new iPhone 3GS? That's what the Apple rep told me on the phone.

I noticed last night that I seem to somehow have a dust spot under my home button on my day old 3GS. Its bugging the crap out of me thanks to my OCD about keeping the screen clean. I'm just going to ignore it though... After some of the newness of the iPhone wears off in my head I know I wont even notice it anymore.

What was the outcome of your visit to the store? Did you get a new screen? How long did that take?
