I recently did some experimentation with my Canon Optura 60 and HV40 DV camcorders. Somehow, with one of the recent versions of Mac OS 12 Monterey, I believe version 12.3, some kind of bug was developed that prevents video capture software from detecting IEEE-1394/FireWire video cameras! I would go into System Profiler on my M1 MacBook Air and my 2012 15" unibody MacBoon Pro running Monterey, and they indeed detect the camcorders, but QuickTime Pro, iMovie and Adobe Premiere Pro (Intel version) do not. (I doubt Final Cut Pro does in this case, either.)
This is unusual, because DV capture/streaming DID work on earlier builds of Mac OS 12 Monterey, like in this photo of me doing so on my MacBook Air running the initial release version of Monterey (12.0.1).

It's hooked up via the Thunderbolt display linked to my CalDigit TS3 Plus dock.
I know this is not an issue with the camcorders or the FireWire cables I use. They work just fine on my 2012 13" unibody MacBook Pro running El Capitan...

(Here I am using iMovie '11.)
...and even on the Windows 10 Boot Camp partition on my 15" unibody MacBook Pro. So it definitely has to be a Monterey issue...

UPDATE: Just updated both Macs to Monterey 12.3.1., and the problem is still there.

This ist to confirm: I tested DV Capture using a Sony HDR-1 connected via FW-TB2-TB3 cable and adapter setup on the following Macs:

1. Intel MacBook Pro 13" late 2016 with BigSur: works fine
2. Mac mini M1 2020 with Monterey 12.01: works fine

3. MacBook Pro 16" M1 Max with Monterey 12.3.1: camera is detected in system profile but is not available for capture neither in Quicktime, FCP, Adobe Premiere 22 or any other tested capture software.

Well, that‘s exactly what I did last week. I am in contact with Apple recording it and sending it in for review. My workaround is using an dedicated MacMini M1 with Monterey 12.0. and transfer the recorded footage to the MacBook Pro Max, which I do not want to downgrade from 12.3.

My workaround right now is to capture DV/HDV footage on my 2012 13" unibody MacBook Pro running Mac OS 10.11 El Capitan, using the QuickTime Player or whatever, and then load the footage onto an external hard drive and then import it onto my M1 MacBook Air.

This morning Apple support called me back. We did a screen capture with time stamp and Capture Data Log, which I sent to Apple. Hope this will help to solve the problem. However, this seems to be kind of a wakeup call, that it's time to transfer all those precious video memories from the 90's and early 2000's into a more recent format.

Yep, I updated my Monterey Macs to it today. Tested DV capture on my M1 MacBook Air and it works again, just as I figured would happen.

DV capture is working fine on Ventura also. Interestingly, it didn't work with the no-name Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter. It required the Apple branded adapter.

iMovie and FC drop clips in Ventura with my Sony DCR-TRV9. Apple says it's because the camera is not supported!
Even though I see all the clips on my monitor. 90 minutes on the tape; only 30 gets saved
