DVD boot issue

I am trying to install OS X 10.6 Server on an external HD connected to my 27-inch iMac. When I try to boot from the DVD, it takes forever to boot and then the interface is painfully slow. It looks like a slow slideshow. After a while it stops responding all together. I tried imaging the DVD onto a flash drive and booting from that, but it won't boot. It gets to the grey apple screen but stops there.

Anyone else have this experience.

Does the USB flash memory thumb drive use GUID as partition map scheme and Mac OS Extended (HFS+) as format?

Yes, it uses GUID and Mac OS Extended Journaled.
