I am thinking about buying either a powerbook or ibook with a superdrive and was wondering if i can backup DVD's/Make personal copies that are playable on a home dvd player with a Mac. Does a mac come with this software standard, or is software available that can do this?

for burning dvd's you'll probably want to get Roxio's Popcorn or Toast 7.0, actually i believe Toast 7.0 now has a version of Popcorn, which is a compression/burning software so that you can compress files that are larger than 4.7GB and fit into one 4.7GB DVD. Hope this helps.

P.S. I tried disk utility, which comes with OS Tiger, doesn't work for my DVD burning needs. But Popcorn is a sweet program!

Hello, as follows this is for "legal backing up your dvds"
Now here it is: MacTheRipper (MTR)= use this to rip to HDD
DVD2oneX (DTOX)= for the compression or Popcorn (I use DVD2oneX)
Toast= to burn but if you have Toast 7 it will also compress and burn.

Now from what I have read Toast 7 does take some time to compress (the Popcorn app in it) but many have said it is worth it. Some will say the same for DVD2oneX with the statement that it is faster but when going for the quality either will be fine.

Once you use MTR you may not live with out it ;) you can get it from www.versiontracker.com If you want the newest ver. go to their web site and it is a donation for ver. 3.0.

About the drive, just remember that a SD in a PB/iBook will not be as fast as some other drives as they are an 8x speed and the HDD is a touch slower than a iMac/PM.

Okay time to have some fun :p Any more Q's ask along the way:D
